President Trump Pardons Binance Founder CZ

TLDR

  • President Trymp has pardoned Binance founder CZ.
  • CZ was found guilty of failing to implement proper AML protocols, among other violations, and sentenced to four months in jail.
  • He also had to step down as Binance’s CEO and pay billions of dollars in penalties.

President Donald Trump has pardoned Changpeng Zhao, according to several major news outlets. Known in the crypto world as CZ, he’s the founder of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance. The pardon effectively wipes the slate clean on his federal conviction for money laundering failures.

While we couldn’t find anything official coming from the White House itself as far as a press release, the White House apparently has released official statements to all major news outlets, and CZ himself posted about it on X. Let’s get after it.

CZ Begins

Before we get to the pardon, let’s recap the rollercoaster ride CZ and Binance have been on.

Changpeng Zhao, a figure as well-known in crypto as Elon Musk is in tech, built Binance into an absolute behemoth. But with great power comes great scrutiny from Uncle Sam.

The Crypto Knight

In November 2023, the Department of Justice (DOJ) brought the hammer down. CZ pleaded guilty in federal court in Seattle to violating the Bank Secrecy Act.

The main charge? Failing to set up a solid anti-money-laundering (AML) program. The DOJ argued this wasn’t just an oversight; they called it a “deliberate and calculated effort to profit from the US market without implementing controls required by US law.”

As part of the plea deal, CZ agreed to step down as CEO of Binance. The company also had to cough up a massive $4.3 billion settlement. For his part, CZ was looking at potential prison time. Prosecutors pushed hard, asking for a three-year sentence to send a message to the rest of the crypto industry.

However, when the sentencing came in April 2024, the judge went much lighter, giving CZ just four months in the pokey. It was a slap on the wrist compared to what prosecutors wanted, but it was still a conviction for a major figure in the crypto space.

Enter the Trump Card: The Crypto Knight Rises

Fast forward to Thursday, and the script got completely flipped. The White House, under Trump’s authority, announced a full presidential pardon for Zhao.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt didn’t mince words. She framed the original prosecution as a politically motivated attack by the Biden Administration. “President Trump exercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden Administration in their war on cryptocurrency,” she said in a statement.

Leavitt’s statement painted the DOJ’s case as an overreach, highlighting that there were “no allegations of fraud or identifiable victims.” She also pointed out the harsh three-year sentence prosecutors sought, which even the judge seemed to think was excessive. “The Biden Administration’s war on crypto is over,” she declared.

CZ took to X to show his gratitude.

Why Pardon CZ? Dypto Crypto’s Two Pennies

Okay, so that’s what happened. But why now? A presidential pardon is a huge deal, and they aren’t handed out like candy. Here are a few potential reasons driving this decision.

The most obvious angle is that the President is trying to unravel the “war on crypto”. For the past few years, many in the crypto community have felt targeted by the previous administration, particularly by then-SEC Chair Gary Gensler.

High-profile lawsuits against companies like Ripple and Coinbase have fueled the perception that the US government was actively trying to stifle the industry.

By pardoning CZ, Trump is making a loud and clear statement: “I’m on crypto’s side.”  He made that promise over a year ago. And he’s keeping to his word. Love him or hate him, he’s been great for the industry.

What Does This Mean for Binance Users?

So, a crypto billionaire gets pardoned. Cool story, but how does it affect the average crypto holder? Most coins have been “crabbing” as they have been for the last several days. But BNB? That’s a different story.

After the news broke, the buyers piled in, and the Binance native token saw more price action today than any other blue-chip.

It’s not a coincidence.

The lesson? Narratives still play a huge part in the crypto market. News like a Presidential pardon can do wonders not just for CZ, but for the entire ecosystem. Binance.us is back in business, fees are lower than ever, and the team looks ready to continue its dominance on the international crypto stage.

Another Win for the Industry

The pardon of Changpeng Zhao is a landmark moment. It’s more than just one man’s legal troubles disappearing.

It highlights how politicians’ views on digital assets have shifted over the last year — from a sketchy, unregulated frontier that needs to be tamed to a landscape of innovation and economic opportunity that needs to be nurtured.

The future of blockchain and digital currency will continue to be fiercely debated on the national stage. But this one is a win for everyone who believes in crypto as well as CZ. Why? Because he’s the hero we deserve. /Batman references
