Is Bitcoin Cash a Good Investment in 2025? Does It Have a Future?

Is Bitcoin Cash a Good Investment in 2025

If you’ve heard of crypto, you’ve undoubtedly heard of Bitcoin. But what about Bitcoin Cash (BCH)? Its name seems to allude to a physical (cash) Bitcoin (BTC) form. However, BCH is its separate digital asset, built to exist on a decentralized protocol distinct from Bitcoin’s.

There is a link between Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, though. And given BCH’s relatively low price, it’s hard not to wonder whether it has the potential for even a fraction of BTC’s performance. This alone would make BCH a worthwhile investment.

So is it

In the following sections, we break down Bitcoin Cash and examine its links to Bitcoin, its historical performance, and investor sentiment to measure its quality as an investment.

How Is Bitcoin Cash Related to Bitcoin?

Bitcoin Cash was created in 2017 as a hard fork of Bitcoin. It formed when a section of the Bitcoin network broke away to start a new, separate blockchain after a scaling dispute in the Bitcoin community.

Some developers advocated for Segregated Witness (SegWit), an upgrade that optimized transaction data and set the stage for additional off-chain scaling solutions. Others believed the blockchain only needed an on-chain solution, like bigger blocks.

So when SegWit won the vote, this opposing group split the Bitcoin network to create a separate chain with larger block sizes (8MB vs 4MB) and no SegWit. The new chain became Bitcoin Cash.

BCH shares Bitcoin’s basic design but aims to be faster and cheaper for everyday transactions. Its goal is to provide the “peer-to-peer electronic cash system” Satoshi envisioned when creating Bitcoin; a vision its creators felt the original network strayed from.

Today, Bitcoin Cash has upgraded its block size to 32 MB. This allows it to process more transactions per second than Bitcoin at lower fees (average ~$0.006 vs $1–$5 per transaction), making it more suitable for small purchases and remittances.

Nonetheless, the blockchain has only seen a limited level of adoption as a means of payment.

Historical Performance of Bitcoin Cash

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is one of the top crypto assets in the market. With a price of ~$400 and a circulating supply of 19.87M, it is the 19th largest cryptocurrency by market cap. But the road here has been very volatile, and as you’ll see, BCH is performing well below its historical levels.

BCH’s launch coincided with the 2017 bull run. Starting at $412, it rode the hype to more than 10x in value,  hitting $4,355 by mid-December. But almost immediately, the crypto mania that had consumed the world for a moment ended and prices began plunging.

Bitcoin Cash was not spared. In fact, it was one of the worst hits, losing all the value it had gained plus some more over the following year. An internal split resulting in another fork (Bitcoin SV) didn’t help the situation. By December 15th, 2018, the price sat at an all-time low of $75.

In early 2019, BCH began a modest recovery: it climbed to about $500 in June 2019 before stalling and would spend the rest of the year in the $200 – $400 range.

BCH oscillated with the broader market in 2020. 2021 would be a much better year for Bitcoin Cash. Riding another bull market, it surged above $1,600 in May 2021, though it never came close to its 2017 peak. As the market euphoria cooled, it retraced into the $400–800 range.

Since then, it has underperformed significantly relative to Bitcoin. It was around $430 in early 2022, but by mid-2023, had steadily declined into the low $100s. A few factors weighed on BCH:

  • Waning hype for old altcoins
  • Competition from DeFi/Altcoin buzz
  • Regulatory concerns

Interestingly, in mid-2023, BCH saw a brief rebound that coincided with an institutional listing (EDX Markets) and a general crypto uptrend. It ended 2023 around $250 and even popped to about $719 by April 2024.

Yet this rally was not sustained: by August 2024, BCH was back near $273, before another short-lived spike to ~$640 in the rally following the elections. As of early May 2025, BCH is trading around $400, far below its past highs.

BCH’s multi-year price chart looks choppy: highs in late 2017, mid 2021, and early 2024, followed by deep pullbacks. It suggests a tendency to spike in crypto bull runs but quickly lose steam in the aftermath.

By contrast, Bitcoin’s rallies have been more sustained, reaching several new all-time highs throughout its rallies, even recently. Other top assets like Ethereum, Solana, and BNB have also enjoyed more sustained growth.

Reasons to Invest in Bitcoin Cash (BCH)

Despite its relatively underwhelming performance over the past few years, Bitcoin Cash is still an attractive investment prospect because of its;

Potential for High Returns

BCH still has a low market cap (~$8 billion) compared to other early assets like Bitcoin (~$2.2 trillion) and Ethereum (~$300 billion). This leaves room for significant percentage gains if adoption grows.

High Liquidity for Easy Transactions

Bitcoin Cash is a mainstream crypto asset. It is listed on virtually every major crypto exchange, and its trading volume sits at hundreds of millions of USD daily. This gives the asset high liquidity, making it easy to enter and exit positions.

Use Cases

Modern standards value utility. In this regard, BCH’s design targets real payments with fast confirmations and low fees. Many merchants accept BCH payments, and some even offer discounts.

Established Track Record

The Bitcoin Cash project has a good development track record. Since its launch, it has consistently paid miners and run without major outages, even surviving a hard fork with minor disruptions.

BCH’s development community continues to release improvements. A recent upgrade added VM limits and high-precision arithmetic to support smart contract features.

Lower Transaction Fees Compared to Bitcoin

BCH is cheaper if you want to go beyond investment into active participation. Its average fee is tiny (~$0.006) compared to Bitcoin (up to $5 during peak periods), making it a more attractive alternative for micro-payments and transactions.

Active Development Community and Support

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is one of many Bitcoin forks that have emerged. But it is one of the few to survive and arguably the most successful of all. This is thanks to the active community and strong ecosystem it has gathered and sustained over the years.

Does Bitcoin Cash Have a Future?

Bitcoin Cash’s long-term prospects depend on adoption trends, competition, and broader market forces. On the positive side, the project retains real utility for payment. So if global crypto adoption grows, there will be a demand for fast, low-cost payment coins like BCH. Regions with unstable local currencies may also find a partial hedge or money-transfer tool in BCH.

Importantly, BCH development is tackling new areas. New upgrades have added capabilities that enable advanced smart contracts and DeFi on the network. This is part of a broader plan to diversify BCH use-cases into tokenized assets, stablecoins, and decentralized apps.

But none of this will come easy. BCH faces stiff competition from Bitcoin, which remains digital gold, with the largest developer base and security budget. Lightning Network is making Bitcoin more scalable too, which eats into one of BCH’s main selling points.

Ethereum, Solana, and other smart contract chains also compete for developer attention and users. Even stablecoins like USDT and USDC serve as digital cash alternatives that many merchants use to avoid volatility.

Market trends suggest caution. 2025 will see rapid evolution in the broader crypto market (Web3, CBDCs, and regulation).  But while institutional interest in Bitcoin is growing, few institutions target BCH specifically.

Are There Any Downsides to Investing in BCH?

It’s crucial to weigh the risks of investing in BCH before buying in. These are:

  • Volatility: BCH’s price is highly volatile. It is, after all, a crypto asset, meaning it experiences massive price swings and follows no guaranteed trends.
  • Adoption Uncertainty: BCH has not seen mass adoption despite its technical benefits. Only a few thousand merchants worldwide accept BCH. Concerns about network centralization and competition from Bitcoin and altcoins have limited its footprint.
  • Security and Development: BCH’s network security is lower than Bitcoin’s due to a smaller number of miners. This makes it somewhat more vulnerable to 51% attacks or reorganizations, although none have happened to date.

Additionally, BCH’s developer community is smaller. Fewer active developers mean slower innovation and potential bugs. It can also be harder to recruit new talent to BCH’s ecosystem.

  • Regulatory Risk: As governments scrutinize crypto, payment-focused coins could face restrictions. For example, anti-money-laundering laws or payment service regulations may limit how easily BCH can be integrated into mainstream commerce.
  • Opportunity Cost: Investing in BCH means not investing elsewhere. Many altcoins and new projects have outperformed BCH in recent years. There’s always a chance that a newer, faster, and more programmable blockchain will steal BCH’s limelight.

Price Predictions for Bitcoin Cash Going Forward

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) launched in August 2017 and peaked at $4,355.62 on December 20, 2017. It then entered a prolonged bear market that saw lows near $75. Since then, BCH has largely traded between $150 and $500.

2025 Outlook

Most expert surveys place BCH between $280 and $700 through 2025, with intermittent spikes above $700 under bullish conditions.

FXOpen projects a minimum near $380 rising to $960 by year-end, depending on adoption and macro sentiment, while CoinStats similarly forecasts a $300–$710 trading band, citing growing transaction activity.

Mid-Term (2026 – 2030)

According to forecasts, BCH carries potential for bigger returns over the next couple of years. Gate.io highlights a bold forecast of $1,500–$1,600 by 2027 if network upgrades and adoption accelerate, with conservative targets near $1,391 by end-2025 before further growth

Investor Sentiment About BCH

Current sentiment toward BCH is mixed. On the positive side, dedicated crypto enthusiasts remain confident in its mission. Many BCH holders spend the period following last year’s halving to accumulate, suggesting that they are optimistic about its outlook.

On the other side, mainstream crypto analysts often rank BCH behind Bitcoin, Ethereum, and even Litecoin in terms of adoption and innovation. This is because BCH is less recognized and understood by the general public than the other larger coins.

Global sentiment varies by region. In the Philippines and some Latin American markets, BCH is relatively popular, boosting regional confidence.

Who Should Invest In Bitcoin Cash?

Given its projected prices, utility, and other factors, BTC can be judged a worthwhile investment for various investor and user profiles. Long-term holders will find a scarce currency with a capped supply, positioning it as a potential store of value or inflation hedge.

More risk-tolerant investors will find plenty of opportunities capitalizing on BCH’s price volatility and high liquidity to trade regularly. On the other hand, if you use cryptocurrency for payments, BCH could be a worthy addition to your spendable crypto stash.

Lastly, BCH can also be a good investment if you’re looking to diversify your crypto holdings. Adding BCH can slightly lower risk (or at least differentiate exposure) relative to holding only Bitcoin or Ethereum, since BCH’s price often moves independently.

How to Buy Bitcoin Cash

You can purchase BCH on centralized exchanges such as Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, or Bitstamp using fiat currencies (USD, EUR, etc.) or by trading other cryptos (Bitcoin, USDT, etc.). Buying it is straightforward:

  • Register on an Exchange
  • Deposit Funds
  • Place an Order
  • Secure Your BCH
