TLDR

  • Striple brings USD stablecoins to 100 countries.
  • Steak N’ Shake will start accepting BTC as payment this week.
  • Rumble partners up with Tether. (At this point, who hasn’t?)

Stablecoins are steadily becoming a major player in global finance. With a market capitalization exceeding $230+ billion, these digital currencies have cemented their role as a reliable store of value, especially in regions grappling with economic instability.

Stripe, the global payments powerhouse, has now stepped firmly into this domain, announcing the launch of stablecoin-based accounts for clients across more than 100 countries.

But that’s not all. Even more use case news came out this week! Let’s get after it.

Stablecoins Meet Stripe’s Ecosystem

Stripe’s new stablecoin account feature allows users to send, receive, and hold USD-denominated stablecoin balances, which operate similarly to traditional fiat bank accounts.

According to the May 7 announcement, the feature will initially support Circle’s USDC and Bridge’s USDB stablecoins. Notably, Stripe acquired the Bridge platform back in October 2024 (the deal finalized in February), signaling its ongoing commitment to innovation in payments infrastructure.

Blockchain is about so much more than “Wen price go up” and “Why price down?”. This major update aligns with the growing demand for stable, efficient, and inflation-resistant financial tools.

Banking the Unbanked

Stablecoins are already gaining traction as a store of value in regions with high inflation and challenging capital control laws.

Stripe’s move brings a necessary bridge to the global financial system for consumers in places like Argentina, Turkey, and Colombia, allowing them to transact in a stable currency even if their local economy is in turmoil.

One of the most promising aspects of stablecoins, particularly in the context of Stripe’s expansion, is their ability to “bank the unbanked.”

Unlike traditional financial systems, which require significant infrastructure, stablecoins operate via blockchain technology, making them accessible to anyone with:

  • A cellphone
  • An internet connection
  • A crypto wallet

The simplicity is incredibly helpful for developing countries where expansive financial infrastructure or stable local currencies are lacking.

Individuals can bypass traditional banking barriers using stablecoins and platforms like Stripe, enabling cost-efficient, cross-border transactions without the high fees typically associated with traditional remittance systems.

Lower Costs, Faster Transfers, and Financial Inclusion

For businesses, the benefits are just as profound. Stablecoins reduce the cost of cross-border payments while increasing transaction speed. This is particularly advantageous for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets that are often stifled by predatory foreign exchange rates and limited access to global markets.

Translation? Users can buy things in stablecoins, and businesses can accept them without paying absurd exchange fees or dealing with skyrocketing inflation.

Stablecoins Aren’t Alone in the News

The surge in stablecoin adoption comes amid broader changes in cryptocurrency’s role in commerce. For instance:

  • Steak ‘n Shake, a fast-food chain, is set to begin accepting Bitcoin payments at all its locations starting May 16.

  • Rumble, the video streaming platform, will launch a crypto wallet in partnership with Tether later this year, competing with giants like Coinbase and PayPal.

These developments highlight a growing normalization of digital assets, not just as investments but as functional currencies shaping the future of how we transact.

We’re Entering the Next Logical Phase For Crypto – Adoption – And Not Everyone Is Ready

While the launch of Stripe’s stablecoin account feature is worth celebrating, it also raises questions about the future of global finance:

  1. Will traditional banks adopt stablecoin technology? The efficiency of these digital currencies may push traditional institutions to integrate them as they keep up with customer needs.
  2. How will regulators respond? Governments are keen to regulate stablecoins to mitigate risks while maintaining financial order. Stripe’s move could accelerate regulatory clarity, which is something the US is currently struggling with.
  3. Is stablecoin adoption a stepping stone for broader crypto acceptance? Platforms like Stripe could be pivotal in paving the way for broader public trust in other digital asset classes.

Crypto Becoming Mainstream One Cheeseburger at a Time

Ten, or even five years ago, did you think you’d ever be buying up cheeseburgers and milkshakes with Bitcoin? We did. We knew it. But it’s honestly happening faster than we thought it would. All of these companies, Tether, Circle, PayPal, Stripe, and many more, are competing with each other, and it’s turning the tide for the crypto industry.

Crypto and stablecoins are becoming easier to buy, find, and use.

Stripe’s introduction of stablecoin account functionality isn’t just about bolstering its platform. It’s part of a larger narrative where blockchain technologies and stablecoins address critical global financial system gaps.

Offering stable, easily accessible solutions for payments and savings positions the company as more than just a payments giant. It cements its role as a mover and shaker in the digital economy.

For individuals and businesses in developing economies, these innovations may signal better financial inclusion and stability. And for the rest of the world, they represent a glimpse into the seamless, borderless future of money.
