Another One? Big Players Buying the Dip… Again

TLDR

  • Institutional players are still buying the dip.
  • Strategy picked up nearly 3,500 BTC over the last couple of weeks.
  • MetaPlanet announced it had bought over 300.

Full. DJ. Khaled. The cryptocurrency market is famous for its volatility, and in the current downturn, when most retail investors are hesitant to make big moves and some are even panic selling, institutional players are buying the dip.

Companies like Strategy and Japan’s Metaplanet are seizing the moment to expand their Bitcoin holdings significantly, demonstrating their faith in the long-term potential of the asset.

Strategy Doubles Down on Bitcoin

Bitcoin treasury giant Strategy has been on a mission to solidify its dominance in the cryptocurrency arena. According to an 8-K filing with the SEC, Strategy recently purchased an additional 3,459 BTC for approximately $285.8 million in cash between April 7 and April 13. The average price? A hefty $82,618 per Bitcoin.

Not too shabby, Mr. Saylor.

This latest acquisition boosts Strategy’s total holdings to a staggering 531,644 BTC, worth over $45 billion based on current market prices.

Their average purchase price sits at $67,556 per Bitcoin, meaning they’ve spent about $35.9 billion in total, fees and expenses included. To put this into perspective, Strategy now controls more than 2.5% of Bitcoin’s finite 21 million supply.

That’s an audacious bet on Bitcoin’s future. And we don’t hate it.

How Is Strategy Funding These Buys?

The funds for this latest Bitcoin splurge come from the sale of Strategy’s class A common stock (MSTR). Last week, the company sold 959,712 MSTR shares, raising approximately $285.7 million. And there’s a lot more in the pipeline. As of April 13, Strategy still has $2.08 billion worth of MSTR shares available for issuance and sale under its existing equity program.

But that’s not all.

The company also has perpetual preferred stocks in play, with $20.97 billion worth waiting in the wings. This is part of the firm’s ambitious “21/21 plan” — a strategy designed to raise $42 billion in equity offerings and fixed-income securities to fund its Bitcoin purchases.

Metaplanet’s Growing Appetite for Bitcoin

Strategy isn’t the only corporate player making waves in the Bitcoin market. Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has also been steadily building its crypto portfolio.

On Monday, the Tokyo-listed firm announced its latest purchase of 319 BTC for around $26.3 million, at an average price of $82,549 per Bitcoin.

The recent purchase brings Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings to 4,525 BTC, valued at roughly $382.1 million based on current prices.

The firm’s average acquisition price sits a bit higher at $85,366 per Bitcoin, reflecting their long-standing bullish stance on Bitcoin, even in uncertain market conditions.

What’s Metaplanet’s Plan?

Metaplanet’s strategy goes beyond short-term gains. The company (allegedly) aims to expand its holdings to 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and to 21,000 BTC by the close of 2026.

Doing so would cement its position as Asia’s largest publicly listed corporate Bitcoin holder and place it among the top global companies in terms of Bitcoin reserves.

Why Are Big Players Buying the Dip?

Strategy and Metaplanet (along with MARA Holdings, GameStop, Blackrock, etc…) view Bitcoin not merely as a speculative asset but as a long-term store of value and a hedge against macroeconomic uncertainty. Here are a few reasons why they’re doubling down:

  1. Finite Supply: With only 21 million Bitcoins that will ever exist, institutional players see each dip as an opportunity to secure a larger bag.
  2. Hedging Against Inflation: The increasing adoption of Bitcoin as “digital gold” makes it an appealing hedge for companies looking to preserve the purchasing power of their holdings — especially with current economic uncertainty.
  3. Corporate Strategy: Both Strategy and Metaplanet have developed long-term plans centered on Bitcoin adoption, aiming to capitalize on its potential as a disruptive financial asset.
  4. Market Opportunity: While retail investors remain cautious amid volatility, institutional money often views downturns as prime buying opportunities.

What Does This Mean for Retail Investors?

If you’re a retail investor, the actions of these corporate giants might make you stop and think. These companies aren’t acting on a whim. Their decisions are backed by extensive research, bold strategies, and a long-term outlook.

However, it’s worth noting that they’re also playing a different game.

With access to billions of dollars in capital and the ability to withstand massive losses in the short term, their risk tolerance is much higher than that of the average retail investor. For the everyday trader, financial safety and proper portfolio diversification remain key.

Any BTC Buy Is a Good Buy

The moves by Strategy and Metaplanet illustrate growing corporate confidence in Bitcoin’s potential, even as the market weathers periods of uncertainty.

With over 2.5% of Bitcoin’s total supply now in Strategy’s hands and Metaplanet (allegedly) planning to more than double its holdings in the years to come, the game is unmistakably changing.

However, the question remains for retail investors and smaller crypto enthusiasts like yourself — is this a sign to follow the whales or tread carefully? The hard truth is we don’t know. We’d love to scream “yes” from the rooftops. But like many other retail investors, many on the DC team are waiting to see how the tariff drama shakes loose.

If nothing else, these developments serve as a reminder that, even in volatile markets, opportunities abound for those with a clear strategy and long-term vision.
